與 很 多 香 港 人 一 樣 ， 我 亦 喜 歡 閒 來 逛 街 。 不 是 逛 商 場 掃 街 血 拼 ， 而 是 沿 中 半 山 幾 條 貫 穿 東 西 的 早 年 開 發 道 路 散 步 。
在 羅 便 臣 道 、 堅 道 和 干 德 道 蹓 躂 的 時 候 ， 常 有 機 會 看 見 或 大 或 小 的 麻 石 牆 和 長 於 其 上 的 樹 。 我 愛 邊 看 邊 幻 想 ， 開 埠 初 期 那 些 洋 商 官 紳 ， 就 是 在 石 牆 後 給 平 整 的 土 地 上 ， 建 起 一 幢 又 一 幢 糅 合 歐 式 和 本 地 風 格 的 大 宅 ， 這 些 只 有 英 文 名 字 的 大 宅 的 屋 主 ， 最 愛 於 偌 大 的 陽 台 上 ， 極 目 維 多 利 亞 城 和 開 揚 維 港 景 致 。 縱 使 滄 海 桑 田 ， 瑰 麗 大 氣 的 住 宅 早 已 經 變 成 呎 價 五 位 數 字 的 所 謂 摩 天 豪 宅 ， 港 島 半 山 麻 石 牆 這 片 獨 特 的 風 景 ， 仍 然 為 曾 經 優 雅 寧 靜 的 香 港 ， 留 下 最 後 的 憑 證 。
石 牆 後 的 平 地 叫 做 「 臺 」 。 建 在 這 些 臺 上 的 住 宅 ， 既 有 屋 前 的 少 少 空 地 作 緩 衝 ， 亦 能 居 高 臨 下 ， 看 繁 忙 大 路 卻 又 能 夠 享 受 鬧 市 中 難 得 的 隱 蔽 空 間 ， 單 為 這 點 罕 有 的 閒 靜 環 境 ， 就 值 得 了 。 是 夜 因 事 到 麥 當 奴 道 ， 的 士 沿 途 經 過 的 豪 宅 ， 都 不 及 幾 幢 建 於 世 紀 初 的 舊 樓 吸 引 我 的 視 線 ， 還 未 及 回 頭 之 際 ， 車 子 走 到 道 路 的 尾 段 ， 緩 緩 駛 上 斜 路 ， 右 面 正 是 一 大 幅 麻 石 牆 ， 斜 路 盡 頭 是 一 幢 只 見 英 文 名 字 的 住 宅 大 廈 ， 要 到 訪 的 錄 音 室 就 是 這 的 地 牢 改 建 而 成 。 一 九 五 八 年 的 地 牢 ， 配 上 最 先 進 的 音 響 設 備 和 原 裝 黑 膠 碟 ， 加 上 石 牆 腳 下 的 數 隻 花 貓 ， 為 反 常 翳 焗 的 九 月 秋 夜 ， 添 上 點 點 久 違 了 的 城 市 浪 漫 感 覺 。

On the one Hand, the Wall seems to serve as a perfect Breeding-Ground or Cradle for the long, winding, creeping, clinging and flourishing Roots ----- enabling them to broaden the spider-web-like and ivy-like Network they have long already formed. They just remain persistent and seemingly perpetual despite the adverse Weather Conditions they are sometimes confronted with, let alone in favourable Weather Conditions. On the other Hand, the Roots seem to tend to keep the Wall in Place ----- providing it with some Sort of Reinforcement ----- so it will not tumble down. This "Creator-given" well-balanced, remarkable Relationship is a good Example illustrating that some Things are bound to be dependent on one another and can co-exist ...... peacefully and harmoniously. I strongly support the Concept of Heritage Conservation.
Let me add that such Walls and Trees should be conserved.

It seems as though a dungeon-like Place of such a Description is the secret Hide-out or Headquarters of a Syndicate or of an Organisation engaged in some Sort of Espionage. The 數隻花貓 are merely devised to act as a Means of Camouflage ----- as an Attempt to lessen the tense Atmosphere accumulated within and without the 地牢. Ha-ha!! Just joking. No Offence is meant.

This Morning i happened to see on TV a Movie entitled "好奇害死貓", starring 劉嘉玲, and caught a Scene where the leading Actor and two Women were walking hurriedly one after another up a Succession of Stone Steps which were laid against a Stone Wall (sorry, this Time without any clinging Roots!!). I suddenly thought the Steps and the Wall, so well-positioned and leaning against each other in perfect Coordination, would make an ideal Sight and Topic for a Sketch or two. I also suddenly imagined a Scene where a Couple of starving Stray Cats are roaming about in a very narrow, filthy Alley, mewing all the Way. At the End of the Alley is a granite-made spiral Staircase which leads to a towering, century-old, haunted Mansion overlooking and with a dominating View of the Alley. I think long, winding, circling Alleys and Lanes ------- built like a Labyrinth ------- would also inspire a Painter.
